Nail-sick Welsh slate roof stripped, rafters checked, new breathable underlay and battens, re-slated with Spanish slate and new Code 4 lead to the chimney and party-wall abutments.
The job
The slates were sound but sliding — nail sickness across both slopes. Stripping, re-felting and re-slating with matched Spanish slate gave a roof good for another 80 years at a fraction of the cost of Welsh.
What it involved
- Scaffold to front and rear
- Strip and stack reusable slates; dispose of the rest
- New breathable underlay and treated battens
- Re-slate with 500×250 Spanish slate, copper nails
- New lead flashings to the chimney and abutments
- Dry-fix ridge
